HISTORY
Winemaking
has always been a tradition in the village of Fompedraza,
although some of the vineyards disappeared with the
agricultural reconvention.
The
Benito Hernando brothers, Fernando, Gaspar and Javier,
owners of Bodegas Briego, have recovered this tradition
that their father was already exercising in the 60's.
They have called this project of fight and illusion
Briego, synonym of fight - fight for the quality of
this wine, fight to defend rural life and fight to
revive the village of Fompedraza.
They
started by buying back vineyards. In 1988, they began
replanting in the municipalities of Curiel de Duero,
Pesquera, Peñafiel and Fompedraza. Today they
own 70 hectares in production and they control the
quality and production of vineyards of more than 60
years old. In
1992, their dream finally came true when they elaborated
their fist wine under the D.O. Ribera del Duero.
WINERY
Their wines are produced from their best grape, the
Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), which has been carefully
selected to match the different types of wine - Joven,
Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva - and undergo a
controlled fermentation to obtain the best quality
in terms of body, structure, fruit aromas, etc.
After
resting for a few months in stainless-steel vats and
clarifying through the cold winter months, the wine
starts to age in French and American oak barrels.
They currently stock 500 American oak barrels and
450 French oak ones.
Their
commitment to quality drives them to carry out exhaustive
control of temperature and humidity and to renew the
barrels every five years. Once the wine is aged in
oak, they carry out the final blending of the wine
that, after the bottling process will rest in the
cellar to mature and improve the aromas.
