History

The Torremilanos Estate is situated within the municipality of Aranda de Duero in Burgos. The wine making history of the cellar began in 1903 when, the founder of Torremilanos Calisto Seijas Ruiz Zorilla, introduced the wines to the marketplace. In 1974 Pablo Peñalba Lopez acquired the property and began the constructing of the wine cellar which today we find at the foot of the vineyards taking up the traditional French tradition of “vineyards and cellar always together”. This was how the Ribera Del Duero´s famous winemaking story began.

Torremilanos is the geographic name of a hill situated on the furthest part south of the area known as Ribera Del Duero. The name originated from the times when the River Duero formed the frontier between Arabic Spain and Christian Spain. On top of the hill was built a watchtower in order for them to be able to keep vigil of the region south of the river.

The winery

The hill Torremilanos reaches, in its highest point, 890 m above sea level. With rich soils which reach great depths it is the perfect terrain in which to cultivate grapes. The vines of the estate range in age from 10 to 80 years old. The vines are comprised of 85% Tinta Del Pais (Tinto Fino /Tempranillo) and the rest divided between varieties such as: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Albillo, Sauvignon Blanc, Macabeo, Petit Verdot amongst others.

The quality of the wines from the Estate of Torremilanos is due to the perseverance of the cellars to produce the best grapes possible year after year, working the vine in the way dictated by the various changes of weather which appear from harvest to harvest.

The wine cellar itself is nestled at the bottom of the hill surrounded by the vineyards. Inside the building we find a barrel making section which has been functioning since 1989. The wood used to make the barrels is 100% French Oak, selected and brought to the estate in its natural state in order to be dried (between 3 and 5 years) in the open air. The wood is chosen according to its neutrality and porousness respecting the natural personality of the grape through each harvest. All wines from the estate are barrelled for a minimum of 6 months and some up to 36 months with the barrels being changed every four years.

The hotel

In this historic wine producing atmosphere we also find a beautiful 4 star hotel built in the traditional Castillian style created by Pablo Peñalba Lopez and his wife Pilar Perez de Albeniz. The hotel has 37 double rooms (4 of which are Suites) built around an indoor patio.

The building itself has 3 floors – on the first we can find the Reception area with sitting area separated by glass and Cafeteria/Bar. On the second floor we find several meetings rooms and a newly opened Restaurant with different dinning rooms which seats up to 250, 150 and 70 people respectively. All in all the Torremilanos Estate is the perfect place accommodating all needs ranging from a well needed break away, a business meeting, a romantic dinner or solely to discover its wine making history.

They are about to open a Wine Spa.
