This
is one of the traditional wineries in Rioja, making good Riojan
wine adapted to the modern times without loosing the typical Rioja
characteristics. The winery is also representative of what is
happening in the last decades in Rioja, new technologies combined
with tradition to get wines that satisfy the modern taste without
disappointing the faithful Rioja lovers. Bodegas Ramon Bilbao
was founded in 1.924 by D. Ramón Bilbao Murga a wine trader
of Rioja wines since 1896. In 1.972, the family business was converted
into a corporation, and a new winery was built to keep on making
the best wine, respecting the tradition. This winery has undergone
major improvements and expansion that ended in 2000.They just
celebrated the 75th anniversary. Nowadays it is an emblematic
winery in Rioja, producing high quality matured wines using good
raw materials: grapes from controlled estates and vineyards and
American and French oak barrels, and leading edge technology:
stainless steel vats, with scrupulous control of parameters such
as fermentation temperature, evolution of alcoholic and malolactic
fermentation, colour extraction, etc.
They
are also very innovative in terms of wine tourism, they understand
it is important to be open for visitors, and they are one of the
few wineries in Haro that offer guided visits in Spanish and English.
They welcome everybody and they are even open during the weekends.
If you want to visit them during the week an appointment is necessary.
It is best to contact them anyway to know the opening times and
the schedule for visits in English. Ramón Bilbao is a medium
size winery with modern equipment that will show you good winemaking
as it is nowadays.
They
have 4.200 barrels used to produce 1.250.000 bottles per year,
and have a capacity of 3.450.000 litres. Currently they are adapting
the winery to produce wine in as it was produced in the beginning
of the century, in oak fermentation vats with a capacity for approximately
20,000 litres
This
winery produces red wines, white, and rosé wines, using
the native varieties allowed in Rioja: Viura for whites, Garnacha
for rosés, and Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo
for red wines. They produce Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva
red wines that are the result of a careful and meticulous work
from the vine to the bottle. They are especially proud of their
Gran Reserva, Viña Turzaballa, a wine of unique personality,
bouquet and expression that combines the qualities of the great
wines that have been aged over a long period (6 years), and it
is just produced in exceptional vintages. They also have the new
style high expression wine, Mirto, suited to modern taste, with
more fruit and body and produced using old vines and new oak.
And their Crianza Limited Edition that is a bridge between the
traditional crianza and the more modern Mirto.
