The magnificent castle of Peñafiel is now home of the wine museum Museo Provincial del Vino. Although most of the present castle dates from the early fourteenth century, it was founded in the eleventh century and was rebuilt several times over the ensuing centuries. The museum shows all the aspects of the culture of wine, from the vineyard to the glass, including all the aspects of wine making, wine and gastronomy, wine tasting, etc
The location of the castle is on top of a narrow hill that separates the valleys of the rivers Duero and Duratón, offering wonderful views of the whole area. The museum is located underneath the southern patio of the castle. The setting of the museum within the castle is, more than a restoration, a new construction project since the museum is put inside one of the patios with absolute autonomy and independence from the existing structure. It is a structure of wood and steel designed by the architect Roberto Valle González, which is separated from the castle wall.
The ground floor is dedicated to the vine, wine making process, technology and aging, wine artisans and traditional measurement systems, wine drinking and tasting, wine distribution, wine history, wine in art, history and literature, gastronomy and wine and wine celebrations.
In the basement one can find the Wine Tasting Room, the Exhibitions room, the meeting room and the library. The museum also organizes wine tasting courses.
It is advisable to complement the self-guided Museum visit with the guided visit of the castle. You can also finish at the end with a commented wine tasting of 4 different wines, rose, young wine, crianza and reserve.
