VINTAGE SPAIN NEWSLETTER. Wine tasting tours in Spain

Christmas is almost here, time for wine, sparkling wine (cava) and gastronomy. We wish you have great time and enjoy every moment. We hope that the World, like a good wine, improves with aging and gets better this new year

Wine and Don Quixote in La Mancha is our tour this month. Our selections are a true luxury treat, the winery Miguel Merino in Rioja, chef Raúl Vaquerizo from El Rincón del Olivar in Valladolid, and a great new book on Spanish wines, The wines of Rioja by John Radford.

We know and like the places and establishments we recommend, this is why we can talk about them and also why we would appreciate very much your opinion about them. They are all very open and friendly with wine lovers and most are out of the tourist track.

FEATURED TOUR

WINE AND DON QUIXOTE IN LA MANCHA

2005 is the 4th Centenary of the publication of the first edition of The ingenious knight don Quixote de la Mancha, the best known piece in Spanish literature. To join this celebration we invite you to follow this route in La Mancha, where you will enjoy winery visits with special wine tasting and a tour to the famous mills fought by don Quixote. You will also discover the authentic gastronomy of La Mancha in selected restaurants or in a field meal or "comida campera" in a winery. We will taste the spectacular and famous manchego cheese always tasty, but really outstanding accompanied by a good manchego white or red wine. And experience the famous tapas in the bars of La Mancha. This tour can be specially designed for corporate events.

FEATURED WINERY
MIGUEL MERINO - D.O. Rioja. Briones

One of the smallest wineries in Rioja and at the same time one of the more outstanding ones, not only for the great wine they make but also for Miguel’s enthusiasm and dedication for its wine, which we think it is one of the main secrets in the making. He makes classical Reservas of Rioja with a modern touch. The best thing we can recommend you is to taste it.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: A NEW BOOK
THE WINES OF RIOJA by JOHN RADFORD
Published by Mitchell Beazley Classic Wine Series, Nov 2004.

The first book devoted exclusively to the wines of Rioja since 1987, it covers the history, geography and development of the wines, soils, grapes and winemaking technology. Detailed profiles of more than 100 bodegas, some historic, some ultra-modern and some slightly unhinged. There’s a full list of all the bodegas in the region and a definitive translation of the current reglamento, at a time when regulation is changing radically in a ground-breaking move unprecedented anywhere else in Spain.
