This
is Alejandro Fernández's winery in the province
of Zamora, in an area that was once known as “Tierra
del Vino”, the Land of Wine in Spanish. It
was formerly dedicated to producing wine and then
to breeding fighting bulls, until Alejandro Fernández
refurbished it and dedicated it once again to its
original purpose. It has become one of the most beautiful
properties in the winemaking world with almost 800
hectares of varied lands on the banks of the River
Guareña.
It
is a winery that respects the environment and is
integrated into it.
The
barrels containing wine are stored under the vaults
of the old underground cellars. Respecting the peculiarities
of the place where the grapes have grown, they also
have the personal and unmistakeable touch of the
Fernández Rivera family. One hundred and
twenty-five men worked in the dark silence for 17
years between 1750 and 1767 and hewed away space
from the rock until they managed to create a beautiful
labyrinth of passages exceeding 3,000 square metres.
The
excellent Tempranillo vines are planted in an area
exceeding 250 hectares with a very special microclimate
provided by the waters of the River Guareña.
The river crosses the winery and meadows covered
with centuries-old holm oaks, cork oaks and oaks.
The vine stock was planted on its own roots and
complemented with some very old non-grafted vines
located by Alejandro in the Guareña valley
itself.
